- If you already know you are divorcing or filing for custody, talk to an attorney first so the investigation targets what matters legally.
- If you aren’t sure what is happening and need the truth before deciding anything, a detective can be the first call.
- Investigations directed by an attorney may get added protection; ask your lawyer.
Call a lawyer first when…
- You have been served, or you are ready to file
- Your safety or your child’s safety is at risk and you need an order of protection
- There is a deadline, hearing or existing order involved
- You need advice on what evidence the court will consider
Call a detective first when…
- You suspect something but don’t know if it is real
- You want to decide whether to stay or leave based on facts
- You need to find someone, such as a spouse who moved out or a witness
- Timing matters and a pattern might not repeat
How they work together
The best results come when attorney and detective talk directly. The attorney knows what facts move the case; the detective knows how to get them lawfully. Many of our cases are assigned by attorneys; read about how we work with attorneys.
If you hire us first, we’ll write our reports so they are ready to hand to whatever lawyer you choose.
This guide is general information, not legal advice. Laws change and every situation is different; talk to a Tennessee attorney about your case. Last reviewed October 25, 2026.

Will a detective tell me if I need a lawyer?
Yes. If your situation clearly needs legal advice, we will tell you so before spending your money on investigation.
Talk it through with a detective.
