- Verify the agency’s Tennessee license before you share details or pay.
- Ask exactly what they will do, how they bill, and what you will receive at the end.
- Walk away from anyone who promises results or offers to do something illegal.
1. Verify the license
Tennessee requires private investigation companies and investigators to be licensed through the Department of Commerce and Insurance. You can check a license at verify.tn.gov. See how to verify a detective’s license.
2. Questions to ask
- Have you handled cases like mine, and in this area?
- What exactly will you do, on which days, and why?
- How do you bill: hourly, per day, or a flat fee? What about mileage and expenses?
- What will I receive at the end: a written report, video, photos?
- Will the detective who did the work testify if needed?
- How will you contact me, and how do you keep my case confidential?
3. Red flags
- Guaranteeing a result, such as “we’ll catch them”
- Offering to get phone records, bank records or hack into accounts
- Offering to put a tracker on a car you don’t own
- A large retainer with no plan or written agreement
- Pressure to decide on the first call
4. Prepare for the first call
