Can alimony stop if your ex moves in with someone in Tennessee?
It can. Tennessee law treats an alimony recipient living with a third person as a reason to revisit support. But you have to show it, and “they're dating someone” is not the same as cohabitation.

- For certain types of alimony, Tennessee law presumes that a recipient who lives with a third person needs less support.
- Cohabitation is shown with a pattern over time: overnights, shared routines, vehicles, mail and addresses.
- Your attorney files to modify; a detective documents the pattern.
What the law says
When a recipient of alimony in futuro or transitional alimony lives with a third person, Tennessee law creates a rebuttable presumption that the third person is contributing to, or receiving support from, the recipient, and that the recipient therefore does not need the same amount of support. The court may suspend or modify alimony. The recipient can try to rebut the presumption.
The exact effect depends on the type of alimony in your decree and its wording. Rehabilitative alimony and alimony in solido are treated differently. Your attorney will tell you which applies.
What cohabitation looks like in evidence
- A partner’s vehicle at the home overnight, repeatedly, over weeks
- The partner leaving in the morning for work from that address
- Shared errands: groceries, school drop-offs, yard work
- Mail, deliveries or a vehicle registration at the address
- Public social media posts describing the household
One overnight is dating. A pattern of overnights and shared daily life over a meaningful period is what courts look at.
How we plan a cohabitation investigation
We start by establishing whether the partner’s vehicle is present overnight on a sampling of nights, then document mornings when the partner leaves for work. Public-records research ties the partner’s vehicles and addresses together. The result is a dated log with photos and video that your attorney can present. More detail is on our alimony cohabitation investigations page.
What not to do
Don’t drive by the house yourself night after night, contact the new partner, or confront your ex. It can look like harassment and undercut your request. Let the evidence speak.

How we can help
Licensed Tennessee private detectives, lawful methods, and reports written for the people who will read them.
Does dating someone end alimony in Tennessee?
Dating alone usually does not. Living with a third person can trigger a presumption that support should be modified, depending on the type of alimony.
How long do you need to watch to prove cohabitation?
It varies, but courts look for a pattern. We typically document a sample of nights and mornings over several weeks.
Who files to change alimony?
Your attorney files a petition to modify. Our documentation supports that petition.
