How to keep your investigation private

If the person you are worried about shares your phone plan, your computer or your bank account, they may see more than you think. Here is how to keep your case to yourself.

The short version
  • Use a phone, email and device the other person can’t access.
  • Watch shared accounts: phone bills, bank statements, cloud backups, and family location sharing.
  • Tell your detective how and when it is safe to contact you.

Phones, computers and accounts

  • Shared phone plans can show call and text logs; consider calling from a work phone or a friend’s phone
  • Shared cloud accounts can sync messages, photos and browsing to other devices
  • Family location sharing may show where you went
  • Use a private browsing window, and clear history on shared devices
  • Create a new email account for your case, with a password no one else knows

Payments

Payments from a joint account show up on joint statements. Ask your detective about payment options, and consider how a charge will appear. If you are in a divorce, talk to your attorney about how investigation costs should be handled.

Communicating with your detective

Tell us the safe times and safe methods to reach you, and whether we can leave voicemails. We never contact you through a channel you haven’t approved. This site also includes a quick-exit button that takes you to a weather page instantly.

If you are afraid

If you fear how the other person will react, prioritize your safety over evidence. Call 911 in an emergency, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. Read about orders of protection.
